Shafts

Types
There are three basic types of shafts. They are -

Steel Shafts - These are heavier than their torque ratings and in case when they are assembled at the same length that of graphite, they give a heavier feel. Steel shafts also have the advantage of durability and there non painted surface resist them from getting scratched. A steel strip is rolled into a tube, and is drawn over a mandrel until the diameter and wall thickness are reduced to their exact specifications and, this is the point where the pattern is formed on the shaft.

Graphite Shafts - Made from graphite tapes, these shafts are made by wrapping the tape around a steel mandrel which has an epoxy binder. Then on, the wrapped shaft is succumbed to temperature and the manderal is removed. The raw shaft is then sanded and cut to proper length, at which point it receives a clear or colored paint coating. Its light weight is the major advantage of this type of shaft.

Titanium - Although its application is not wide but Titanium is also installed in the manufacturing of shafts. The main features of this shaft are its weight (lighter than steel), and its vibration dampening.

Materials
Shafts are generally made of carbon steel and occasionally from stainless steel. Besides this graphite tapes too are incorporated in the manufacturing of graphite shafts. Other than these, Titanium is also a significant material used to manufacture shafts. Some of the shafts also require nickel plating. Copper and zinc too are employed to make shafts, though not often.

Application
Shafts are suitable for industrial motors, auto-lamps, home appliance and mechanical devices. The use of shafts can be trailed in the hydro electric projects where they are used in surge chambers and ventilators. In water supply segment these shafts are installed for the purpose of uptake and down take and supply riser. In case of waste water they are used as drop shafts and in Tunnel projects their uses is confined to accelerating houses and access.
