Types
Automotive Lubricants - Automotive lubricants are used to join the velocity joint that connects the axles to the drive wheel while allowing the suspension to move up and down. These are critical components that require high performance lubricants. Brake Fluids, Dry Film Lubricants, Engine Oils, Motor Oils and Solid Film Lubricants are some examples.

Aviation Lubricants - All the heat resistant greases that are used to reduce the friction between two heavy machinery parts of an aircrafts are known as aviation lubricants. Examples of lubricants that are used widely in the aviation industry are Piston Engine Oils and Turbine Oils.

Grease - A number of semisolid lubricants that possess a higher initial viscosity as compared to oil and is mixed with with another thickener substance, a soap, to form a solid, is grease. Some of the most commonly used grease are Gear Grease, Lithium Based Grease and Silicone Grease.

Industrial Lubricants - Compressor Oils, Cutting Oils, Gear Oils, Heat Transfer Fluids, Hydraulic Oils, Metalworking Fluids, Quenching Oils, Refrigeration Oils, Rolling Oils are some of the most commonly used lubricants in the industrial sector where the mainly perform the task of reducing wear and tear between two machine parts.

Marine Lubricants - Marine lubricants is used for all sliding and moving surfaces. Cylinder oils and tank coatings are some of the most fervently used lubricants on the marine industry.

Solid Lubricants - Solid and lubricants are those that form a dry layer or coating excluding moisture and performs the function of reducing friction, binding, and wearing. They often contain chemical additives such as corrosion, oxidation, and rust inhibitors.

Materials
Some of the most common materials used for the manufacturing of lubricants and chemical additives are Lanolin (wool grease, natural water repellent), Water, Mineral oils, Vegetable (natural oil) and Synthetic oils. In some cases petrol, crude oil canola oil, castor oil, palm oil, sunflower seed oil and rapeseed oil from vegetable, and Tall oil from animal sources, are also used to produce these chemical additives and lubricants.

Applications
One of the single largest applications for lubricants, in the form of motor oil, is to protect the internal combustion engines in motor vehicles and powered equipment. In addition to automotive and industrial applications, lubricants are used for many other purposes, including as a personal lubricant, bio-medical applications. They are also very much in demand in industrial sectors, aviation and marine industries. Efficient operation of machinery largely depends on the selection of right lubricants. Using liquid lubricants under moving parts of reservoir, pump, and tubes is very important. On the other hand solid and semi solid lubricants are best to be used under heavy load conditions and in inaccessible parts where the supply of lubricant cannot easily be revived.
